Day Forty Seven Lake Taupo to Rotorua

So, left out lovely apartment both still looking like we'd been sprayed with Pledge furniture polish. My hair is looking very 'full', it's just a shame I can't get a comb through it!  Anyone know how long it takes silicone to come off the skin?
Had a jaunt into the town. It was very busy cos the Ironman was on. Lots of streets closed. We were heading north on the 'tourist thermal trail'. Stopped at Wai-O-Tapu - billed as a thermal wonderland. Much more impressive than yesterday's Craters of the Moon, much more expensive and much smellier!  The walk round it took about 2 hours.

Strong wind blowing meant we were getting a free, extra smelly, sauna. Mud was bubbling everywhere.   Amazing colours of all the sulphur and other minerals.

The devil's bath

Continued a short way on the road and saw a sign for mud pools. Free!  Watched the mud bubbling away and spouting up in great bursts!  Fascinating!  Also stinking!

Reminded me of the dancing waters in Barcelona - without the music and smell.

Continued to Rotorua, staying in the Holiday Inn. Nice enough room.  Smell of sulphur is everywhere. Got complimentary bus into town and had a wander about. Big town. Another beautiful lake. Italian restaurant for dinner. Back to hotel to book accommodation for Sunday (missing the Beast in this respect, never had to worry about a place to lay your head at end of day!). Off to the coast tomorrow but first a bit more exploring around here.

Phew, another sore feet day 13600 steps only!
